Best practices for a more secure online presence.
The internet, social media apps, and connected devices are convenient and used by everyone. However, threats are always present, such as scammers trying to gain control of your accounts and stealing your personal information online. Online safety and security are possible with strong passwords and the proper settings on your accounts.
Consider these five best practices:
- Use strong and unique passwords for each account.
- Use a combination of words, numbers, symbols, and both upper and lowercase letters.
- Avoid popular generic passwords, like “password”, “password1234”, and your birth date, Social Security number or phone number.
- Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA), if available. This may include biometrics, like a thumbprint or face ID, or a text verification code to sign into accounts. Never share the code with anyone!
- Keep devices and security/antivirus software updated.
- Avoid using public/free Wi-Fi to access sensitive information.
- Enable account notifications when offered such as unusual logins, recently used devices, location alerts, or balance/account changes.
